I have the same problem, only I actually needed this backup.
tried to restore it, and was not able.
tried extracting the tar/GZ file, or whatever the hell it is, and still was not able to import it.
tried importing from cpanel, and also tried importing directly from phpmyadmin nothing worked…..

    Hi Vehicros,

I recently took over development of this plugin from the previous owner and have just released a major new version which is a complete re-write of the plugin.

I’d love it if you’d check it out and let me know what you think.

    Hello Tom Riddle
    thanks,
    Ill check it out.
I was never able to use the previous backup, so im still re-doing lost posts. I had even removed the plugin from 15 websites.
I did like the fact that it did not require a zillion checkboxes and settings.
But Ill go ahead and test it on one site.
Id like to see it have a restore feature, so that anyone could use it.

    thanks

    Hi Vehicros,

Thanks for checking it out, my aim with this release was to simplify the setup and configuration so that the plugin “Just Works”, so hopefully you’ll appreciate that.

A restore feature is something I’m giving a lot of thought too, I’m just not sure how good it could ever really be compared with just restoring your files over ftp. Do you have experience with other restore features?

Here is the problem I am had/having.

Not actually a problem, I have set up wordpress sites for several people. This makes them look toward me anytime they need help. (not a good thing).

Recently my host (justhost) went down for 3 days. Even though justhost was great, and restored all the files from a 2 day old backup. Three of the sites had just posted new content which was not included in the 2 day old backup.

I searched for backup plugins, and backupwordpress seemed to be the best. In this case, backing up the files was not as important as the database.

What everyone could really use is a backup/restore utility.
I also looked at online backup services, but hey, they want $6 per month. I charge less than that for hosting, and it includes backups and restore. So online backup services is not a good option.

I think everyone could use the ease of a plugin, therefore they can safely store their own offline backup files.

As for restoring files. Under the wordpress tools menu there is a restore feature, but it doesn’t always work out right. I think there are issues with existing users VS the create user when it comes to restoring posts. BUT, this would be a good place to start.

Now if only the built in restore feature could import the backupwordpress database files.

Isn’t it funny, how everyday, we are reminded how imperfect we are, even though mankind has made some amazing mechanical devices. Yet, we just cant seem to get anything right the first time.

Which makes me wonder, WHY, didnt the wordpress programmers incorporate such necessities into wordpress in the first place.

    Thanks for your detailed reply,

Can you not restore your database by importing the backupwordpress database file using something like phpmyadmin (there is even a phpmyadmin plugin which you could use if you’re host doesn’t provide access.

I will continue to mull a restore feature over, maybe it will be something I implement in the future.

It was phpmyadmin that I tried, Nope, didnt work, I even tried using the restore utility in cpanel, still no luck.

What didn’t work about it? It should work.

    Thread Starter vehicros

    (@vehicros)

It return some kinda of error, but when I tried in from cpanel it acted like it was doing something, but still didnt work.

I tried several times, but did not save the error message.
The situation was somewhat desperate, I was just trying to get the site back online asap.

The website owner is a celebrity, and was even a stuntman for Jim Carrey.

I will do some testing to make sure importing the database file into phpMyAdmin works as it should.

If you run into the issue in the future, send me an email to support@humanmade.co.uk and I’ll be happy to help.

Ill find some time to install and test the plugin again. I have a demo site set up that I can use, just in case it messes up the database.

    thanks

Thanks for the effort you have put into this.

I appreciate the ease of use with automatic backups at midnight. However, it would be nice also to be able to disable that functionality and/or have an on-demand backup.

    Thread Starter vehicros

    (@vehicros)

    El Core,,,
It does have a “on demand backup.
you have to click on advanced settings

    Hi ELCore,

The next version will allow you to disable the automatic backup. For an on-demand backup you can click the backup now button next to the title on the backups page.

    Thanks, Tom!
