[Plugin: Author Image(s)] $image_dir doesn't seem to work

For the most part, I’m, loving this plugin. I want to use the $image_dir trick to display a smaller version in one place and a larger version in another.
However, the only way it works is if I enter the small directory as the directory in the plugin settings.
In other words, this doesn’t work:
<?php c2c_wp_list_authors_images( $image_dir = '/wp-content/images/authors/small' ) ; ?>
