[Plugin: All-in-One Event Calendar] Some Feedback and why I uninstalled this plugin

  • Hi, just to give my lost research time more sense, I will share my observations with this plugin here. Note to the authors: this is not bashing, I am giving you an unbiased review of what is wrong with your plugin so you might better understand what people need – I am not trying to be extremely polite, but text is just taken from my notes, so in any case please do not take it personally – I totally understand from my own experience that programming a calendar is by no means an easy thing to do, so please read my words as contribution to your success (and how it might get an even better one:)

    This is the list of reasons why I can not use this plugin:

    • Most problematic: “events” are a custom post type (seems so to me), this is an approach that makes some things more complicated than neccessary, e.g. with many themes you will have problems showing events in any kind of “featured” area – also this way events usually are not shown in the flow of posts until you heavily customize your theme – what might break other features or plugin, why you do not want to do this, if you are not absolutely sure that your site-features and theme will not change for a long time.
      This again means that your site content categorization strategy has to be adjusted to this fact. This can be good, if you can build a new site, but usually it is bad, because you will have to generate two posts for an event – one actual calendar event and another post that will occur in the NEWS or WHATEVER categoriy of your site – this is not very clever, even if others are also doing it like this. An event should be an property that can be attached to a post, that way you will have full theme support and can utilize categories or tags to control, where your content is shown.
    • There is no way to input multi-day events that have different event times on different days – but that is quite usual for multi-day events! So if you have a multi-day event that starts on the first day at 12:00 and lasts until 15:00, but the second day runs from 10:00 to 18:00, you have to make this two separate events – not good.
    • “Upcoming Events” widget is shown even if there are no upcoming events.
    • The widget shows every day of a multi-day event as a separate entry, this should be made optional, as it is filling up your widget area with repeated strings.
    • The widget should have more options to change the appearance of the event list.
    • I can not make the “Subscribe to Google Calendar Button” disappear
    • The buttons are really ugly – generally there should be much more options to customize the appearance of the calendar and related items.
    • Also there is small bug showing me “:00 pm” on the beginning of en event string that starts at 8:00 pm
    • Please add an option to delete everything your plugin wrote to the wordpress database! Leave the house, where you have been a guest, clean!

    Maybe there′s more, however that was enough for me! Hopefully this features are easy to add, BTW what I really liked with your plugin is your focus on ical implementation, that alone is a monster of work, I know it! ??

    This has to do with outlook, not with the plugin. Events are stored in ics feed, it is up to the application and the application configuration how to store the events. When you import events by ics feed on Google Calendar it asks you what calendar to use to store the events, the same should be available in outlook.

    Where in my dashboard can I find the All-In-One-Event calendar plugin option? I tried checking under Settings, but it’s not there?? When I want to add an event, how would I do so? Very confused!

    The calendar looks nice, I just don’t know how to add an event. That’s no good. : (

    It is located under Events > Settings. If you cant find it or just shows update button, click on the dashboard screen option (on top right) and select 1 column. Click refresh or update setting. you should see it now. I guess it’s a bug.

    To add event, click on Events > Add new

    I beg to differ about the generated .ics file having to do with Outlook cfg. I add many events to my Outlook calendar using the ‘Add to Calendar’ feature from other sites, e.g. Shutterfly.com, EventBrite.com, GoToMeeting.com, etc. etc. All of them generate/encode the calendar event .ics file so that upon opening, Outlook adds the single event to existing default calendar, instead of adding a new calendar to Outlook.

    You have a great product and this is the only issue holding me back from implementing it on my son’s school web site. I know the product is free so I don’t want to be too picky but I’ll promise to donate if you fix this issue.

    I love this plugin too…but with the latest update..im loving it less ??

    For some reason, the date selector wont pop up when i click in the Date/Time box field.

    This is the behaviour of it:

    From a Windows Computer it work well with Mozilla Firefox and IE9. It will NOT work with Google Chrome or Safari for Win.

    On a Mac it wont pop the date selector on any browser!

    Any ideas or help of how to go about this? I really dont want to delete this plugin as it is perfect, but others using different platforms that contribute to my events calndar are unable to post an event…when they attempt to manually insert the date…it posts the event with a 1970 date!?!

    Basically what is happening when it works well is that the date is inserted with TODAY’S date by default…On the non-working/non-compatible browsers it doesnt have pre-inserted anything(Chrome and Safari for WIN, and all browsers for Mac)!

    To whomever used the modlook flag – It helps if you can tell us WHY. If there’s no obvious spam, we’re left wondering.

    (And an erroneous post like xtossin’s is not a good reason for modlook.)

    You are right, it doesn’t make much sense to put the modlook without a reason ??
    This topic is not about a bug or an issue in ai1ec plugin yet many users use it to report different issues. I think it will be best for the community if we can put each of these questions/requests in their own topic so that new users can find the information they are looking for a lot easily. I find myself having to answer the same question over and over again just because it is not posted as its own topic but is a follow-up reply under a topic about completely different issue.
    If it is not possible, just leave it the way it is and thank you for looking!

    Hi Yani, not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I’m having the same problem as some other folks reported with the calendar refusing to load and just getting stuck in the loading phase (spinning loading wheel in center foreground, calendar fade-out in background). I don’t know if or how i can change the URL of WP site to be consistent with displayed site (www.julieblumenthal.com/classes/ for the main calendar page). Strangely I have an Android phone and it displays just fine on the phone with the displayed site URL, but will only display on my PC or the others I’ve tested with the WP back-end address. Help?!     Can you please give an insight was to when the widget’s multi-day events will get displayed only once instead of multiple times? I’ve seen it mentioned a few times in this thread but as os 1.10 it still has not been fixed and this seems a pretty important issue ??

    I’ve just encountered this today. Create an event that spans across a week, but starts on Monday. Now proceed on to the Calendar Month view: it only shows on Monday.
