[Plugin: Alkivia Open Community] New Features already in queue
-
I hope you are having a nice rest (your site says you’re on vacation). As I impatiently await the next version of Open Community, I have some thoughts on your planned new features.
- Custom user fields. For registration and profile. I believe this is most important and is hopefully easily attainable. Seemingly abandoned plugins – DRegister and Register Plus provide this functionality. Cimy User Fields plugin does as well, but doesn’t use User Meta which might present a problem later. Also read at https://www.dquinn.net/adding-custom-user-meta-profile-fields-wordpress/ that WP 2.9 might be adding new hooks in this area. This same link has a proof of concept of adding custom user meta.
- Privacy settings per user. Sounds like some conditional statements. Hopefully that easy.
- Private messaging. I must believe WP and bbPress integration will require this. Forums without it, just won’t stand up to the competition. Unless there’s something special about OC, I might let someone else develop this and just ensure OC plays nice with it. They will probably want to create a robust interface for this that might be beyond your intended scope.
- bbPress forums integration (Evaluating this feature). I believe you’ve begun this. What beyond having the same profile data shared are you thinking?
- And some other under consideration. Like a framework to extend the plugin’s functionality. This would be great, but with WP, WPMU and Buddypress converging, I’m not sure this will be worth the effort. Don’t know how long the converstion process will take, but I’m hoping by WP 3.0 we have a BuddyPress component that addresses many of these issues. We’ll see.
I’m a totally noob to WordPress, but I’ve been searching around for alternatives in this area for some time and also trying to figure out what is going to change on me in 6 months. From what I’ve found, I’ll be using Capability Manager and Open Community in my implementation.
