Plugin just started posting notifications for donations. This was advertised as a free plugin but the only options are donate or already have donated.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the feedback.

You just need to close the notification.

It won’t show again unless you update the plug-in to a new version.

Glad you like the plug-in otherwise.

So every time it updates it will ask if I will or have already donated. Can this paid request be altered to say can’t afford or would like free version. OR change the plugin to say that it is not free? As it is it feel misleading.

    Hi Toby,

It’s a free plug-in for you to use. Which you are doing.

It’s quite normal for a plug-in to have a dismissible notification asking for financial contributions.

It doesn’t change the plug-in’s free status nor does it impact on your ability or desire to help out.

    You aren’t being misled.

Please feel free to continue to enjoy the use of the plug-in without contributing.

    Thank you! ??

How do I disable the request for payment with each update?

If there is no way to opt out of the payment requests that would appear on every updated forever, I would rather just have the wordpress link back and not this plugin. YOu already have a donate link on the plugin itself. If I had money and my account wasn’t currently negative I would help you out but to be asked over and over again forever isn’t want I am looking for.

It is not a request for “payment” as nothing is “owed”.

It’s a polite notification for a voluntary contribution.

Just dismiss the notification using the cross icon top right as with any WordPress admin notification.

In the time it takes to reply to this thread you could have dismissed hundreds of notifications ?? and there’s only one to dismiss after installing an update.

I can’t agree. When someone is programming illiterate and they see a notification that says donate or already donated with no other options. I guarantee some will see it as a necessary obligation.

This is not just about me, it is about everyone who uses it.

    That’s not what’s happening here.

The options are “Donate”, “Already Donated” and “Close”.

Thank you for your input though.

Maybe change “Close” to “Not now. Maybe later.” ?

    Thanks Steven,

It’s the normal admin notice, the “close” icon UX is provided by the is-dismissible class.

I mean I could add another button but I don’t think it’s necessary and ironically the update would produce another notice to be dismissed.

OK, so we’ve taken another look at this and made the decision to leave it as it is.

    • We do not feel that having a notice politely asking for a contribution with every update is too much to ask or too intrusive, especially seeing as updates are as infrequent as once per month.
    • The notice is very easy to dismiss by pressing the standard close icon provided by the WordPress Core functionality for admin notices and will not reappear for the installed plugin version.
    • We are not alone in displaying admin notices like this. In fact they are extremely common and an accepted way for developers to try to be paid for the time they spend on these free plugins. Just to put this in perspective, this year, we’ve received less than £40 per month (before tax!) in contributions across all the free plugins we provide so we aren’t going to start making these notices less visible.

I know this is not what @tobymikle will want to hear but at least we’ve considered his complaint so it’s not like we’ve ignored his concerns. We just can’t afford to agree with them.

    Oliver
