    I was really hoping to use this plugin but the uploader forgot that most people using WordPress are bloggers and novices. I’m not either and I can’t get this to work. Your instructions contradict each others. First you say Solr Server needs to be running as a pre-requisite. Then you say later it’s not required. I took that to mean that you updated your plugin but didn’t rewrite your instructions. I have no idea what you mean. I have no intention to use this plugin outside of my website, just internal searching so your paid alternative server doesn’t make sense to me when I can run a Solr locally. Problem is, which one? There is the solar for wordpress that you say should be uninstalled (which makes no sense) or Solar 3.6 from Apache. I download and attempted to set up each one with no success. Documentation or walk through is no where to be found. I run XAMPP so I assumed this would be easy. The plugin might work but until a simple non contradictory setup is clearly explained in your install tab, I wouldn’t recommend this plugin to anyone.

    Yes, I confirm, you need to have a Solr Server available (https://lucene.apache.org/solr/). This Solr Server can be installed and configured by yourself. In this case, you will need to install Oracle Java 1.6 and Tomcat (or Jetty) on your server. If you don’t want to manage a Solr server yourself, you can rent a Saas Solr server instance at https://www.mysolrserver.com.

    I don’t think I say this. I say that the “Solr for WordPress” plugin is not required anymore. I think you make a confusion between a “Solr Server” and the “Solr for WordPress” plugin.

    I agree and it is up to you. If you can install and manage your own Solr server, do it. It is for this reason that the plugin configuration form allows it and don’t oblige to rent a Solr instance in https://www.mysolrserver.com.

    I confirm there is a confusion here as “Solr for wordpress” is a WordPress plugin not required anymore so it can be uninstall and “Solr 3.6 from Apache” is the Solr Server.

    In conclusion, if you want try again this plugin, I would be happy to help you and improve installation instructions.

    can u please write the steps for installing the self hosted apache solr server instance for wordpress.

    use bitnami installer, they are very easy to install. but some linux skills are required for sure…

    otherwise, better to use other search engines, which are come with hassle free installer and are schema less.
