This must have bee asked many times but I’m look to understand how the plugins repository and stats for ‘Active Installs’ is calculated, or how often ?

I’m see load of plugins that I can’t believe are as low as indicated. e.g. the plugin join-my-multisite by Mika shows only just over 30 installs. I can’t believe this is right.

Sure. Normal WordPress installs check the plugin directory for updates every 12 hours. That check sends our API servers a list of plugins and versions and we use it to look up whether or not those plugins have updates. It also tells us if those plugins are active on that site.

So, we simply store that information and then, you know, add up the numbers. So “30” is a rounded off count of how many sites told us that the plugin was active on them. Pretty straightforward, really.

Now, the number is not perfect because a site must be actually visited for it to ask our API for update checks, so a site never seen never dials home to do update checks. Still, it’s fairly accurate in the long run.
