The recent ‘upgrade’ diluted the distraction free writing capability to zero. The text box no longer expands, showing you the full width of the writing on your page. You just get white areas on either side of the text box, which in my opinion add absolutely zero to the editing of the data within the text box. Worst, this new white area vanishes, with all page items returning, if you mouse over to scroll down/up the text box. You then have to activate the the distraction free writing button again! This is totally useless for editing purposes. Having an expanded text box and seeing the full width of the text is valuable in structuring/editing the page. The current upgrade makes editing harder, and heads it back to the stone ages, capability wise. At least give an option to use the ‘new’ method, or to continue to use the ‘old’ (i.e. BETTER) editing method.

    Thanks

  • You can disable the new editing features by clicking the “Screen Options” tab in the upper-right corner of the page when editing a post/page.

The box will expand.. and uncheck the option to “scroll editor to fit window”… or something similar.

Thanks, the previous suggestion did not work.

I tried something different. I have the screen options checked for two columns. I checked it for one column. I get the full width ‘distraction-free’ editing window, with the full set of editing commands listed above! The screen has the white area, per the new update, and when I now go to the scroll bar, the white area does not vanish and get replaced by the dashboard! In other words, just using one column makes everything work great, including having the white area, as a ‘distraction-free’ environment! I am happy!

Good good. As long as you got something working with which you are happy… then I am happy ??

    Take care.

This problem is not really resolved. I want to have two columns but still get the full screen view for the distraction free visual editing option for larger amounts of text.
It is pain in the arse to scroll down every time I want to edit the publishing options or choose my categories.
You have made good usability into a crappy one. At this point the “distract free editing” is no use to me at all. Especially because it crashes if I hover over the side bars too long while using it.
I am not happy at all about this newest update.

This isn’t a feature of the theme, it’s of WP 4.1

I want to have two columns but still get the full screen view for the distraction free visual editing option for larger amounts of text.

Check the box to “Enable full-height editor and distraction-free functionality.”

THEN hover over the ‘DFW’ button on your editor toolbar.

Click that button to de-select it.

Done ?? Now you have the full height editor, but DFW is off (which was the default BTW, so you have to have turned it on).

Especially because it crashes if I hover over the side bars too long while using it.

Then you have a conflict with a plugin, because that shou;dn’t happen.

I know it is not a theme.

And no, you completely misunderstood what I meant. I want to have the full screen text editor back, the way it was before this update. The area for text editing was larger than it is now on the DFW. When clicking the DFW-icon you could get large area for the text. Then it was much easier to edit long texts when you could get better view on the overall text.

Now if I want to get bigger area for the text I have to change from two sidebars into one, which makes using the features in the right side sidebar very impractical (because it is dropped on the bottom of the page instead). And because the new and “improved” DFW doesn’t enlarge the text editor at all, it only vanishes the sidebars, it is completely useless feature for me. The only reason why I would temporarily disable sidebars was to get more space for the actual text.

You are not being helpful at all and I don’t like these new updates on wordpress.

And now editing long texts is even more difficult because the font size in visual editor is bigger than before. Which is even bigger problem than the crappy update on the DFW. So you see less and less of your text in one overall view.

I also miss the old “Distraction Free Writing” mode (or fullscreen mode), which took the visual editing area to nearly full screen height and only brought back the toolbars on demand when I hovered near the top. The current incarnation seems to do nothing other than temporarily hide the side bars until I move the mouse too far, which seems pointless.

The loss of fullscreen mode is merely annoying on a large desktop monitor. On a small netbook (1024×600 native) it makes the editor almost unusable. Between the toolbars, top bar, and sometimes lower bar, I have only 2 inches of vertical real estate in which to make edits. Even making my browser fullscreen and turning off the “kitchen sink” still leaves me with an editing area less than half the screen height. This makes it very difficult to work around photos or see entire paragraphs.

I run two personal sites on WordPress and manage about 5 professional sites on an ongoing basis. I used the original “distraction free” / fullscreen mode constantly, and have found WordPress much less functional after its loss. Please bring back this important feature!

Please use TWO line breaks between paragraphs for better readability.

And no, you completely misunderstood what I meant. I want to have the full screen text editor back, the way it was before this update.

I did understand that. Since you can’t have that (until someone makes a plugin that does it), I’m explaining what we DO have and how to use it just in case you didn’t know. As I’m not a mind-reader, I have to guess. After all, you said it was a ‘theme change’ at first, so I assumed perhaps you were confused about terminology and wanted to make sure we’re all on the same page.

I’m sorry that explaining how to use and work with the new version of WP 4.1 isn’t helpful. I’m sorry you don’t like the changes. There is no plan, at this time, to go back.
