Please moderate SPAM.

  • Hello,

    First off.. Excellent program. WordPress was easy to setup and the instructions provided were very helpful. Now for my issue.

    Recently I have been getting 6-20 SPAM e-mails a day generated by WordPress 2.3.3. They follow the below example:

    [Raj and Ginny’s Blog] Please moderate: “Blog subject”

    In WP-Admin if I check the comments, I see the SPAM comments awaiting moderation. Example:

    Under WP-Admin, Options, General I do have “Users must be registered and logged in to comment” selected and I checked to make sure that I do not have any extra user accounts created. I am completely confised how these posts are being generated. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Are you sure those are comments and not trackbacks?

    Do you have Akismet activated? You might also want to consider using Bad Behaviour which blocks many bots from accessing your blog in the first place – works great with Akismet. Since using the two together my spam count has dropped from hundreds per week to maybe half dozen a month.

    To be honest… I really do not know. How do I turn off “trackbacks”?

    From the Dashboard: Options>Discussion – uncheck “Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks.)”

    I have them disabled on my blog.

    Excellent. Thank you, I will give that a shot.

    I have not activates Akismet yet as I do not see the “API key” listed in my profile. It’s possible that my support account and WordPress.com account are separate.

    Yeah, to use Akismet you need to sign up for a free account with wordpress.com. You don’t have to have a blog over there, just an account which will get you your API key.

    Yep. I got it sorted. Akismet enabled. Thanks again. Hopefully this will stop the SPAM.

    you will also need to disable trackbacks in all your existing posts. Disabling them in options will only effect the posts you make from now on.

    To disable them in existing posts, go to manage-posts and edit each post. There’s a block in the right column for discussion options. You need to uncheck trackbacks.
