• I don’t know what happened but from one day to the next 2 of my wordpress sites went down, I cannot even access the wp-admin login area anymore.

One website was not even logged in for a couple weeks and no plug-ins were ever installed except for a custom theme. I check on it about 4 days ago and it was displaying fine on the main home page address. Then the next day I check and it is giving me this weird error message.

This is the same for the other website listed bellow. You can check out the error message by going directly to the site. I have not modified any files in my FTP client at all nor changed anything on my hosting side. I was on the phone for many hours with my hosting company (1and1) and they had no clue what was going on. It seems like a problem on their end but they keep saying that this is a wordpress issue and that I changed someone to cause this to happen.

I even looked at the change log (ftp.log) file on my FTP account and saw that no one has accessed the files except for me). I have never encountered something like this.

P.S. Has anyone has any bad experience with 1and1 support? They are so bad in resolving things. I think 1and1 made a terrible decision to outsource all their support to the Philippines just so they can save a bunch of money.

Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.

  • So where’s the list of your sites?

Sorry my mistake, here they are:

    https://www.andrewhilton.com

    https://www.robertooddi.com

    https://www.avijackson.com

After browsing on some forum posts it seems as though my wordpress and/or hosting account was hacked. The IP address on the https://ftp.log file show changes from locations such as Germany, Serbia and Montenegro.

In this case, it’s quite likely that your local computer was compromised and your FTP login credentials were stolen.

You should make sure that your local computer is clean (malware scan) and change all your passwords for your hosting account(s), such as FTP passwords, database passwords and Control Panel passwords, before cleaning WordPress itself. Otherwise you might run into the same problem again.

    Have you tried

    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin? Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

Thanks for your response. It happens that my wordpres account got hacked and thus why there was those problems.

    Everything is fixed now though.

    Thanks again.
