• I’ve put several requests out for help with a URL question. A couple of kind folks have begun to inquire into my situation, but no resolution has been reached. It may be that my question has everyone stumped.

I’m running WordPress on Ubuntu server 7.04. I can access my blog via my public IP and my domain name from both inside and outside my network. My ISP issues me a dynamic IP. I use a dynamic DNS service to resolve my domain name to my public IP.

The problem is that my WordPress(URL) & Blog(URL) settings both need to be set to my public IP for me to successfully connect to the site over the internet. If I change the public IP to my domain name the domain name resolves to the public IP and calls my server. The server sees the domain name in the WordPress database and calls back out over the internet. This results in an infinite loop.

I would not have an issue if I had a static IP, but there must be some other way with so many folks hosting WordPress installations. Am I the only one with a dynamic IP?

Please straighten me out if I’m missing something. Please don’t read my request for help as pushy or rude. I deliberately did not put URGENT in my Topic Title. I know there are probably many others with more pressing needs for help. I simply don’t know where else to turn.

  • 99% of the shared hosting services do NOT offer static IP – so that cannot really be an issue because tons of blogs work all around the world.

And most of the self hosted (read: on their own machine) guys have problems if they don’t understand some basics: you can NOT access your blog locally and from the internet in the same time. That never works. Either… or.

And because WP stores the two URIs in the database – all the redirect tricks (even simpler than yours), usually, fail.

I am not a server guru, make no mistake, I just saw enough struggle in this forum when people try to “outsmart” WP.

Thanks for the reply. Well taken. I have accessed from the internet and the local network, but not at the same time. I enable the directives in /etc/hosts when I want to work locally.

So that said, any thoughts about this situation?
