Please help install new WP theme

Installed wordpress on locahlost, use LAMP (Ubuntu) Yesterday tried to upload new theme, first through upload function, then when it did not work just put it to wordpress/wp-contents/themes folder.
Today nothing works. I try to add new theme to the folder but my WP admin does not see it. I can not reach the theme through upload either. It tells “access to content of wp-contents denied”
Please help to fix this.
