Placeholder appears over text on Text area

When I create a form with a textarea, the placeholder is over anything that is written on the textarea, and I don’t see any option to change this. Not even changing the colour of the place holder, it looks odd regardless. I’d like to make the placeholder disappear once anything is written on the tex area. How do I do it?
