• Ever since installing WordPress for a new blog, I have never received any pingbacks, even though many of my posts have links back to earlier posts on the same blog.

I am running WordPress 5.7.2. I have tried the Ennova and OceanWP themes, but I get no pingbacks with either. I have checked the checkbox in Settings > Discussion to allow pingbacks on new posts.

Here are typical steps that I follow:
    1. Click New Post
    2. Enter some text in the classic editor, select some of the text, and make that text link to one of my earlier posts.
    3. Click Publish

My understanding is that a pingback should be generated automatically, but nothing appears.
I have tried disabling the Akismet plugin to see if it was deleting pingbacks as spam, but even without Akismet running, no pingback is received.

Other plugins I have are Classic Editor, Collapse-O-Matic, Email Subscribers, Enlighter, Insert Headers and Footers, Updraft Plus Backup and WP QuickLatex. I really can’t afford to delete any of these as they are all required for the blog to work properly. All plugins and themes are up to date.

I have contacted my web host (Hostpapa) and they have checked the server logs but couldn’t find anything that would block pingbacks. I am running PHP 7.4 on the host.

Any help / suggestions gratefully received.
    Thanks.

Here is how pingbacks work in WordPress.:

    • We write a post on our blog.
    • After that you write a post on your blog mentioning/linking to our article.
    • Your blogging software will automatically send our blog platform a pingback.
    • Our blogging software will receive the pingback. It will then automatically go to your blog to confirm that the pingback originates there, and the link is present.
    • After that, we will have the ability to display your pingback as a comment. This will solely be a link to your site.

Thanks for the reply but this doesn’t really help. I know how pingbacks are supposed to work, but the problem is that they aren’t working. According to the docs

“Pingbacks also work within your site. This means that if you link to one of your own articles on the same site, then WordPress would automatically send a pingback to itself.”

This is exactly what isn’t happening. I have written several posts with links back to other posts within my site, but no pingback ever appears.

This is a longstanding issue for me. It’s not even deterministic on my blog, sometimes it works, sometimes not. I thought it might be related to a timeout or something but haven’t been able to track it down. I wish a developer would investigate.

Internal pingbacks are extremely powerful research tools when used properly.
