Pingback Link Text Extract

What is it that you want to do exactly?

this is an interesting question – I’ve been meaning to investigate this myself by never got around to it.

basically, when you pingback someone’s post, you end up with something like

[…]an interesting article on wp_guy’s website describing the[…]

it would be nice to be able to control that a little better, as quite often it results in some unpredictable ugly and usually meaningless pingbacks on the other person’s blog.

What I do is separating the comments and the trackbacks and then I just show the title of the trackback… no the […] bla bla […], which is kinda useless.

that helps you… but it doesn’t stop you polluting other people’s blogs when you’re really trying to be nice.

usually they work out fine, so you don’t just want to turn off pings, but sometimes it just pulls the most stupid part of the page – including parts from the header if the link is at the top of the post, etc.

That is the point Ivovic.

I notice it when I create internal ping-backs between posts within my own blog, but that slug of unitelligible text turns up in the remote blogs I link to it too.

Any clues WP-Guy ?

I’ve been having a look at WordPress core files… and it looks like WordPress doesn’t send that piece of text… it’s the other way around. I mean… You send a pingback to another blog… that blog receives it, then goes to your blog and takes the piece of text…

does that make any sense?

yeah, makes sense completely, which is why it sometimes seems to pull parts of the page which are actually around the post, not part of it.

It would be interesting to know if there’s a way to modify one’s theme to reduce that unwelcome effect.
