How about that instead of width: 100% !important; that Andrew suggested you use min-width: 50%; or whatever the percentage you feel comfortable with with smaller images? If the image is smaller the caption will still be 50% (or your value), but if it’s bigger the caption with extent to the image’s width.

I had the exact same problem in Chrome.

I added:

.wp-caption {
	min-width: 70%;
	text-align: center;
}

and now all is fine. Thanks!

It had a site effect that all pictures were scaled to 70% in all my blogs. That was not what I wanted. It overruled the settings. The min-width parameter set to 70% means that smaller images stay small, but the caption is suddenly 70%.

I am still stuck with mis-aligned pictures…
