• So I paid a ‘friend’ to create a website using me that I would be able to edit as I needed as I’m extremely time poor… He suggested using wordpress and got started on it.

Since then, nothing has happened. He is now apparently too busy to do the job, and apparently even answer his phone.

He’s given me a login (but not admin access) to a /wp-admin page and has since told me he’s unable to finish the site for me.

All I can do is login and look at it. I haven’t got a clue what to do next. I’ve realised that I’m going to have to pick up where he’s left off, but I would much rather start from scratch so I can do it my way.

Since he started, he has registered the domain names for my website and linked it to WP, but hasn’t given me any idea how to access the information that I need. The worst part is that I don’t actually know what I need to know and how to find it out… In short, I’m up that infamous creek without the relevant paddle.

Does anyone know how I can go about:

    a) getting access back for my own website
    b) restarting the page/starting from scratch

ANY help would be much appreciated. I’m feeling very in-the-dark with all this…

  • “he has registered the domain names for my website and linked it to WP”

Not good – it means he owns the names and even if you did get the blog login he could move the url somewhere else.
You need to ask him very directly for ownership of the domain names and be given the login to the registrar so you can change the details to your own or arrange a transfer to an alternate registrar (the latter is the best way).

Do you have access to a webhost control panel? If you do you can take the site back but you do need access to phpmyadmin (it’s easy to do).

I don’t think he registered them in his name luckily as I did get confirmation emails to my email address in my name.

What’s the web host control panel?

    Thanks for your help!

The webhost control panel can sometimes be accessed by going to
    https://example.com/cpanel
    and a login should appear.
If it’s the site linked from your name it does:
    https://jessewragg.com.au:2082

Do you have a login for there?

That’s just taking me to ns1.yourdns.com.au which fails to load.

I don’t recognise the cpanel, I’m pretty sure that the only login I got was for the wp-admin bit…

On re-trying, I get to the c panel login page but I definitely don’t have anything for that.

Okay – so that’s the login you need. Get that and everything can be got into your control.
All you can do is nag him for that login.

Do you pay for the hosting or was he doing that for you?

If you are not paying – and as you have registrar access to the domain – you could get a hosting account elsewhere, change the nameservers at the registrar and then start again on the new host.

If you ARE paying for the hosting then he really shouldn’t be holding those details from you.

    Thank you!

I’ll ask him for these details ASAP.

The agreement was that he would organise all of this (e.g pay for it upfront) then tack it all onto my final bill. So at the moment, he has paid for it and I need to pay him.

And when you get it back, if you need help do come back to the forum and help will happen – it won’t be as scary as think it might be ??

Thank you so much for your help!

Just so I can get a full understanding; what exactly is the cpanel?

    Thanks!

It is your hosting management panel.
