    Hi,

I currently have the Popular Posts plugin setup to grab thumbnails from the Featured Image, and displays them in the widget bar.

However, because my featured images are also used as the post headers, they’re relatively high in resolution and file size.

This results in users downloading a lot of extra data for every page load.

Therefore I’m looking for a way to upload smaller thumbnails for each post and have the plugin pull from those instead.

Perhaps the “custom field” option is one way to do this?

If so – where can I find documentation for how to utilize this?

    Thanks!

This shouldn’t really happen unless you configured WPP to use a large image size. The default configuration uses a pretty small size (75×75 if I remember correctly, typing this from my phone right now).

This FAQ explains how to use the Custom Field option: How does WordPress Popular Posts pick my posts’ thumbnails?

If you’re not familiar with how Custom Fields work in general then I recommend checking out the official documentation: Custom Fields. Personally I find using Advanced Custom Fields more convenient (from a developer’s perspective that is).
