    Hi,
I have a backup file generated with Duplicator plugin and I want to manually copy the sql file included in the Duplicator zip file (dup-database__3b94e6c-16152331.sql) back to the wordpress sql database. Is this possible; does it include everything that is not in the www/html/ directory? I have to build up my crashed site again. I do have a copy of the all wp files in the www/html directory. Or do I have to build up a complete WP site and then use the Duplicator plugin to get it back (more work in my case…)

Thanks for your guidance and tips!

    /Ralf

  • Hey @hartings,

The SQL file generated by the plugin is basically a copy of your database at X point in time. You can technically re-run the import script in a tool like phpMyAdmin if the URL to the site is still the same. Just keep in mind that you will be restoring a copy of the database on the date in which it was backed up.

    Hope that helps~

    Thanks Cory!
That was what I was hoping for and expecting.
My copy is a recent one, after which no (?) changes were made, so it should work. I’ll keep my fingers crossed!

What happens when the databas file is not 100% in sync with the WP files in the www/html directory? The wp files only contain the system files, while the db-files contain the actual content of the site, correct? Can you explain a bit more, so I understand what could happen if they are not 100% in sunc with each other.

Thanks again for the quick answer!

In most cases, it usually takes a while for the files to become out of sync with the database, but say you installed a plugin 2 months on August 1st and that is when you created the database. Since then you have updated the plugin twice and the plugin had some large database changes to its structure. In that case, the plugin/theme might give you some issues where you would possibly have to re-install it since the files are more recent that the database structure for that plugin. It’s difficult to know each setup because there are so many different permutations, but that is an example.

    Hope that helps~

    Thanks!
I had a small difference in my Slider plugin but I could easily repair this with the imported wordpress.sql file.
    I got my site back!

    Excellent! Thxs for the update!
