Can you confirm which version of PHP you were using (prior to switching to PHP 8.2)?

Syntax error, unexpected 'Type' (T_STRING), expecting function (T_FUNCTION) or const (T_CONST)

This error can occur under PHP 7.3 or earlier, when loading code (specifically, typed properties) written for PHP 7.4 and higher. At time of writing, WooCommerce requires at least PHP 7.4.

I’m using PHP version 7.4.33 so I don’t think this error is related to me using an old version of PHP. The strange thing is that this persistent error appeared after updating WooCommerce to version 8.6.
At the moment I would not want to upgrade the PHP version to 8.2 as some plugins which I use (including paid ones) do not work well with PHP 8 and above 8. I have tried and found that PHP 7.4.33 is a very stable version at the moment .
Maybe thousands of WooCommerce users are using PHP 7.4, so I’m asking the WooCommerce developers to try to fix the problem. It’s probably happening to many other WooCommerce users too, but maybe they don’t monitor their error log regularly.

Otherwise, the site works without problems, but it’s just that this error accumulates daily in the WordPress error log file and increases its size.

Yep, PHP 7.4 is a perfectly reasonable choice—and WooCommerce should work just fine with that version.

I’m a little stumped as to the origin of the problem, though, as the error messages and the cited line numbers point to this being a PHP compat issue. Bear with us while we think about other possibilities.

I have installed the new version 8.6.1 of WooCommerce, but unfortunately the error remains and continues to be recorded in the error log file.

Could the error be related to the Cron job? I’m using a server Cron set to run every minute. WP Cron is disabled. The following message started appearing in the Site health panel, leading me to believe that the problem might be related to the WP Cron: “The scheduled event, wp_1_wc_privacy_cleanup_cron, failed to run. Your site is still working, but this may mean that scheduled posts or automatic updates may not be executed correctly”

Also, is it possible that when the WooCommerce 8.6 code was updated, there was new code included suitable for PHP 8 that doesn’t work with PHP 7.4.

These are just guesses. I’m not a coding expert, but I have some small knowledge that allows me to keep the site in good condition.

But this error is very annoying and I would appreciate any help.

Fortunately, it does not affect the operation and performance of the site, but the constant repetition of the error bothers me.

Hi, that’s really weird because the error message seems to suggest that indeed the site is running in PHP 7.3, which is not the case.

We don’t know yet what’s going on, but for now we have removed that type hint (and a similar one in a related class) for 8.7 since it’s not necessary for the code to work: https://github.com/woocommerce/woocommerce/pull/44829

Hello!

Many thanks for the hints that the site is running on PHP 7.3, when in fact the version is PHP 7.4. Together with the experts from the support of my hosting company Superhosting.bg, we looked for a reason for the error and it turned out that the server Cron is running on PHP version 7.3 (the version of the server). We fixed this, upgraded the Cron job to PHP version 7.4 and the error disappeared.

Thanks to your hints that there was a version of PHP 7.3 somewhere on the site, and partly to my guesses that the error might be related to the server Cron, we solved the problem.

Once again, I sincerely thank the developers of WooCommerce for the professional and competent advice! Indeed, WooCommerce is the best e-commerce plugin in the world and the team that supports it is made up of exceptional professionals.

I hope the solution of this problem helps other WooCommerce users.
