My server engineers are suggesting that this error is the cause of intermittent “There has been a critical error…” message and intermittent white screens of death…..

[22-Nov-2019 13:16:06 UTC] PHP Notice: Undefined variable: _SESSION in /home/XXXXX/public_html/XXXXXXXXXXX/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-simple-paypal-shopping-cart/wp_shopping_cart.php on line 167

Is there an update I am missing or a fix I can implement?

If the PHP session is not starting then this issue will happen. So the main issue lies with the PHP session not working correctly in this site.

So what does that actually mean?

There isn’t an issue with the server or PHP because I just installed WooCommerce and set up the same products, payments etc and everything is working fine.

Yes – by uninstalling WordPress Simple PayPal Shopping Cart and installing WooCommerce.
