PHP Fatal error: ob_start(): Cannot use output buffering in output buffering display handlers in /wp-content/plugins/advanced-ads/classes/ad_type_image.php on line 184

I have been getting the white screen of death over the last week but this error has been popping up since Dec, idk why it all of a sudden caused this (I think it causes it).

When ever I refresh on a post and it goes white this is the error that is logged when it works the error is not logged.

    Hi chase2017,

    thanks for reaching out.

I read through a few results when looking for threads of other plugins that have the same error. It might be one of three causes:

    – the PHP version is too low. Which one are you using?
    – the Memory is too low
    – a conflict with another plugin

I would first suggest to go to Tools > Site Health in your WordPress backend and check if there are errors about the first two items in the above list or other issues that might be related.

Site Health also comes with a Troubleshooting mode to test plugin conflicts.

These are just the basic steps since I don’t know how experienced you are in debugging. I am happy to give more information if needed.

    Thanks,
    Thomas

    Hey Thomas,

Thank you, I wasn’t aware of wordpress having a site health tool. I was doing the debugging the way I know, check the inspect console, deactivate one plugin at a time, and check conflicts.

I talked with the hosting company they said it was a theme issue, but after I removed all of the image ads I am no longer having this issue. I thought it was a theme issue at first too till i read the error log.

Since I am using hostgator I am stuck at whatever they have, right now it is at 7.1.
The site memory WP_MEMORY_LIMIT is 256M.
And if it is a theme conflict that is going to be a bit of a problem, but the problem is gone now that the image ads aren’t up so I’m not sure if that is the problem.

    Thanks for your feedback.

PHP version and Memory seem to be high enough.

Are you using any other plugin that could affect the output of your site, like one for caching? I saw W3 Total Cache being mentioned a couple of times.

    Thanks,
    Thomas

Thank you for replying so quickly.

Yes I am using W3, I will remove it and see if it continues. I have added some image ads back to do testing with WP tool, though it really isn’t giving me much information. Only issue is shows is my PHP version should be higher.

Hey, i deactivated W3 and it is still having the issue.
While I had the images back on, it was happening everyone now and then. I removed the image ads again and it stopped happening.

    Hi chase2017,

I just wanted to let you know that we are looking into it. The issue is very probably not caused on our end, but it looks simpler to change the part causing it than to go through all your plugins trying to reproduce it. I will keep you posted.

    Hi @chaserogers2017,

    thanks for your patience.

We found a solution to your problem but are not yet sure if it could cause issues for users for whom everything works well. Right now, I would like to offer you a copy of the fix if you reached out directly through customer support. Just send an email with the link to this thread so that it will reach me.

    Thanks,
    Thomas

The next update is going to prevent a warning like reported here and inform about the solution. Unfortunately, it is a problem Advanced Ads is not causing so we cannot solve it on our end.
