    Jetpack Mechanic ??

Some of the Jetpack modules, like Tiled Galleries or Related Posts, rely on the Photon service to resize your images on the fly. This happens even when the Photon module is deactivated.

If you use Tiled Galleries, you’ll consequently see that each one of the images in your galleries is using the wp.com domain, even if you turned Photon off. Without Photon, the tiled effect would have to be achieved by loading full size images, and resizing them with CSS after the page loaded. That would be pretty bad for your site’s performance and speed, as you would have to load several full size images to display a gallery.

I hope this clarifies things a bit. Let me know if you have more questions!

It seems that then https://i1.wp.com has a copy of the original image, correct?

What are the Terms & Conditions of this site for images? Are the images still the property of the original site? Or, is it like many, many sites that say it becomes their property and they have rights to do what they like, as they see fit?

    What about Copyright et al?

Let’s refresh this question and information for many others. I am an avid WordPress user and designer that enjoys the functions contained within the basic Jetpack module. However, recently on more than one site that I manage, we’ve been LOSING images to browser hell, do to your codes mysterious prepending of /iX.wp.com X = 0,1,2,3 to my clients and my own images.

Bottom, line is while I use your module for convenience to support activities like carousel, post forwarding to subscribers, etc. I don’t recall until recently ever seeing these random code inserts. It is creating havoc for my business, and that of my clients. So short of disabling Jetpack and finding another plug-in(s) to do the job. How does one disable these “spam” (unauthorized or requested) insertions that break links and can cause blacklistings?

@creative-talantz You can rest assured: nothing has changed on this front so my answers above are still valid.

If you don’t use Jetpack’s Tiled Galleries, you can deactivate that feature and your post’s images won’t use the Photon feature. The feature is off by default, so if you don’t activate it when connecting Jetpack to WordPress.com you should be all set.

That said and as I mentioned above, a few Jetpack features like Related Posts will always use Photon in order to resize images and get Related Posts with the same image size for all related posts. If you don’t use those features you can deactivate them under Jetpack > Settings.

That seems like the real issue to me here. If your images are public and can be downloaded in less than 10 seconds, Photon will work and you will not run into any issues.

If you do run into issues, it would be good to understand why:

    • Do you upload very large images, that are slow to load by your readers and by Photon? If so, it may be good to install a plugin like this one to make sure that does not happen. This will be a good thing even if you don’t use the Photon feature.
    • Do you use an image hotlinking service that restricts access to images on your site? If so, it may block Photon as well, and it may be good to review that service and make sure it does not block other bots from downloading your images, like search engine bots.
    • Do the images break for no apparent reason? Send us an email, and we’ll look at the problem with you and help you solve this!

    I hope this helps.

I’ve disabled everything related to images, and still i have this behaviour.

I have to enter every image and restore the link manually. It’s hell!

I’ve disabled everything related to images, and still i have this behaviour.

@shawtux By “this behaviour”, do you mean that you see the i*.wp.com prefix added to some of the images on your site? If so, which ones? Are those images in your posts, your pages, are those images inside widgets or added by a plugin?

As I noted above, some images will keep using the Photon feature even when you deactivate the “Serve images from our servers” option in your Jetpack settings:

a few Jetpack features like Related Posts will always use Photon in order to resize images and get Related Posts with the same image size for all related posts. If you don’t use those features you can deactivate them under Jetpack > Settings.

Is this what you are seeing?

i disabled everything, plus modules, plus plugin, and still had the i*.wp.com

decided deleting the images and re-adding them.

This issue still persists, is there any fix for this?
