Hi when I activate Photon, the previously posted images do not display. When I disable Photon, the images added when Photon was active do not display, I have to re-upload them again. I tried also in the incognito browser. I am also using Cloudflare, is it related? I purged the whole cache but it is stil the same. I use also a hotlink protection. Also does htaccess need to be writable? thank you!

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

That’s an odd issue. Hotlinking Protection services may indeed block Photon, but the images should be displayed again as soon as you deactivate the module, since Photon doesn’t actually change the way the images are saved in your posts.

I’ve run some tests with CloudFlare, and it doesn’t appear to affect the way the images are loaded. They stop being loaded via Photon as soon as I deactivate the module.

I wonder if your image protection service may conflict with Photon and WordPress somehow. Could you try to deactivate it for a bit, and let me know how it goes?

does htaccess need to be writable?

Photon doesn’t rely on that file, so no worries there.

Bumped into something similar: When having Photon and Cloudflare enabled, images didn’t show at all. Disabled Photon and images came back, except for the ones at the bottom in the Related posts section. Found this topic here and I can confirm that Hotlinking Protection at the server level does indeed block not just Photon, but also images in the Related posts section. All good now and thank you for such a fine plugin!

Thank you for your input luiseiherrera, I hope this bug will be looked into

I do not think that using Photon is a good idea. Who really wants to have part of his website located at different part of the world ?!

I’m afraid there isn’t much that can be done about it. Hotlinking Protection is there to block any third-parties from accessing images on a site. Photon is a third-party, so hotlinking protection works as expected and blocks it from accessing images.

The only work-around here is to deactivate hotlinking protection, or to stop using Photon.

Who really wants to have part of his website located at different part of the world ?!

@makeonlineshop To clarify, when you use the Photon service your images are still saved in your Media Library on your own server. They’re then copied and served from our Content Delivery Network, for as long as the Photon service is enabled on your site. Our network is composed of dozens of data centers all around the world, thus improving the chances that your readers will get images served from a data center really close to their location. That’s a great way to speed up delivery of images on your site.

Since your images are still saved in your Media Library, you won’t lose any content if you ever decide to deactivate Photon; when you do so your site will automatically start serving local images again.

I hope this clarifies things a bit!

Thank you for clarifying, but still, Google will index pictures that are not on your server and that won’t be accessible anymore with the same links when you will deactivate photon. Definitively not a good idea.

@makeonlineshop No worries there; Google won’t index images served via Photon. Each one of those Photon images includes a canonical link to the original image, which Google will follow to index the canonical image. That’s common practice with good image Content Delivery Networks, and Jetpack’s Photon does that too.

Thank you, so it’s better than what I have read on some websites. People (me included) should know more before repeating stupid things that others have said ! ??

    Thank you again.
