    It uses the WordPress gallery. When you insert a WordPress gallery there is an option to link to either the ‘Attachment page’ (what you currently have) or the ‘Media File’. Change it to Media File to link to just the image.

    We also recommend using a lightbox plugin, such as Carousel included in the Jetpack plugin, to show them in a full screen lightbox.

    Thank you for the recommendation of Jetpack Carousel. I have had the same issue until finding this post and it worked.
