Photo Carousel plugin?

I’ve been seeing more of these flash-type photo carousels on home pages like this one. Are carousels essentially same as some of the photo rotator plugins? Carousels seems to have additional functionality with the descriptions, linking and forward buttons. Appears to be good way to highlight your site’s featured items or stories.
