Hi – We previously used the Subscribe2 plugin, but it has been deactivated for about 4 months.

Last week some emails were sent out to some but not all people. I received it myself, and can see through analytics that a few others clicked on the link.

Not only was the plugin not activated, but the post that triggered off the email, and was mentioned in the email, is not visible on the blog anywhere. It is also not in the trash. Only one other person has access to the blog and they didn’t write the post either.

We use Sucuri and there are no security issues reported.

The blog post was called ‘My new simple post’.

I have now deleted Subscribe2, but I’m concerned that it could have sent an email when it was not activated. It makes me think it could have potentially created the blog post too. Has anybody else experienced something like this?

I don’t know what to do except wait to see if another email goes out next week.

    Cheers, Rob

  • @rob,

There would be a fundamental and huge bug within WordPress itself if deactivated plugins were able to run on sites despite being deactivated.

I have found a very old plugin that may have created your post called “Simple Post” but it is quite old, not updated and I think it’s unlikely you are even using it but I may be wrong.

In my opinion, Subscribe2 was activated in order for the email to send OR the email notification came from another source – like another plugin.

However, one important lesson has been demonstrated here – if you are not using a plugin and don’t need it for the future then delete it, don’t just deactivate it.
