Phantom images (@2x.jpg etc)
-
Recently i have noticed many ‘phantom images’ appearing in my UPLOADS folder. sometimes they are labelled alphanumeric:

and are an exact copy of another image I already have:

So i am curious why they are made at all?
sometimes, the mystery images list a size-suffix that i do not actually use on my site:

I use various ways of deleting them; FileZilla, IMAGE CLEANUP plugin etc, but they are remade overnight and are back in my uploads folder. I also notice, when using the ‘Force Regenerate Thumbnails’ plugin that the 200×200 size is always remade.
My question is: I there any easy way to find out which plugin made these images? Or if they are made by WordPress ITSELF, why is it making images I ALREADY have, and can i force it to use the proper ones?. I would love to get to the bottom of this.
