Hi, I uploaded wordpress to my root folder and it worked ok. The problems started when I tried to install new themes. Whichever I chose it just said I couldn’t install it and it said something about permissions. I changed the wordpress folder to 777 (aaargh – sorry!) now the site won’t open. I just get ‘403 Permission denied’. So I deleted the whole folder on my server and re-uploaded everything – problem is I still keep getting 403. Do I now have to set the permissions on every file in the folder?
    Hope someone can help. Thanks

  • Hi gazooooo. What did you do to fix it?

    Hi,

It may be a pain at first, but never set your directory permissions to 777. That can allow scripts and other malicious code full access to your machine. If you’re having issues with permissions and you are hosting on your own server, that is an issue we may be able to troubleshoot with more information, however if it’s a shared hosting account (ex:godaddy) then you would most likely need to contact them as to why your permissions are screwed up.

I just updated to 2.9.2 and I think my server tightened up on security.

I noticed permissions were weird when I could not alter my sidebar.php and had to up the permissions one notch.

WHAT IS the general rule for files and folders? Because now parts of the site won’t show up either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Help. (I new this before but have forgotten it…)
