Permissions
-
I was just trying to set the permalinks in WP3.0b1. When I press the save button I get the message:
“If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.”
I checked my .htaccess permissions and they were at 775 as is the enclosing directory. I changed it to 777 and then saving of the permalinks works fine. I change it back to 775 and it doesn’t work – I get the same error above.
What should I be doing properly?
I’m uncomfortable leaving permissions at 777. Isn’t that a bit dangerous?
2nd very closely related question: Permissions for directories, wp-config and .htaccess seems to be a never ending adventure. I see a lot of posts questioning this. Why does this problem come up so often for so many people?
