Permission errors

  • Can WP not be programmed to make permission issues invisible to the user? What I mean is struggling with permissions when uploading images through the dashboard.

    Could it not be programmed to update the permissions on relevant folders before upload, and set them back to what they were after upload? That way, after a fresh install of WP3.0, we wouldn’t get errors uploading media, like:
    – Missing temporary folder
    – Cannot move image to upload/2010/…

    Seems like a good idea to me.

    That would depend on the server configuration. That kind of file modification by server-level scripts would pose a huge security risk and is consequently not allowed by most hosting providers.

    Isn’t that required to allow automatic upgrades of WP and plugins? Changing the permissions to allow creation of new folders and files?

    Some servers require permissions to be 777 before directories can be created or added to by server-side PHP scripts, and others allow this action with 755 permissions, but the permissions are never altered by server-side PHP scripts.
