Permalinks: Slugs Not working

  • Hi,
    I’ve just installed WordPress via GoDaddy.com’s automatic application installer, and I’ve tried several times and keep having the same problem, which is that while numeric permalinks, such as:

    https://www.mysite.com/blog/?page_id=4

    work fine (for page ID 4, which is also called “shop”, and yes I’ve checked several times to make sure the slugs are correct), when I try to use:

    https://www.mysite.com/blog/shop/

    I get page not found errors. I’ve reinstalled WP several times and it keeps happening. I’ve tried the various permalink setups, and set .htaccess to 666 at the root level and for directory “blog”, but it keeps happening. I thought I might have messed something up during customization, but I installed a clean version in a new directory and it continues to happen there, even without any customizations at all and using the default WP theme.

    Any help enormously appreciated.

  • I think you should set your .htaccess to 777 first, after that set up the permalinks in WP, this way WP adds some rules to the .htaccess and when you are done set the file’s permissions back to 666.

    On Godaddy or secureserver linux hosting accounts, before messing with .htaccess try this:

    Go to the Customize Permalink Structure page. Where it says “Custom, specify below” put in the following:
    /archives/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/
