Hello, I thought everything was working until I tried to use the Categories widget after changing my Multisite from subdomain to subfolder. It seems that sub-level category Permalinks are not working.

Here is my Categories taxonomy structure:

    News
    - Local
    - World

    I DO NOT WANT:

    example.com/blog/news/local

I have already tried the “remove blog slug” trick: In the primary site I set Permalinks to default. Then I goto Network Admin > Sites and change the Permalinks to:

    /%category%/%postname%/

If I use the Categories widget, the Permalinks will be:

    example.com/news/local/
    example.com/news/world

Both URL’s end up at a 404 page.

But, if I add “blog” to my Permalinks, everything works.

THIS PROBLEM ONLY SEEMS TO OCCUR ON THE PRIMARY SITE, NOT OTHER SITES ON THE NETWORK.

    Any help? Thanks

    Notes:

    • I need to use WPSEO plugin
    • I have tested with WPSEO plugin active/deactivated
    • I changed subdirectory install to subfolder because I am using a single site domain SSL that is not a wildcard SSL
    • I have not yet tested if this occurs on a fresh install.

Not a bug. WP is working 100% as expected. That’s what happens with subfolder installs.

But… Here’s a trick. Make the edit in Network Admin > Sites > Edit Site and Save it.

THEN go to the permalink page on the site and just visit it. DO NOT press save! Just visit the page.

    See if that fixes it.

Unfortunately, that didn’t work. Thank you for your reply.

After I do the Network Admin Permalink Structure “trick” to remove “blog” from slug – I’m cautious to never reset site Permalinks. I think that’s what you were suggesting?

i’m gonna try to do a fresh Multisite install and see what happens. Or am I fighting an uphill battle? Primary site requires /blog/ in the Permalink in a subfolder install?

It was working beautifully in my subdomain install ??

    Thanks

OK, the only way I was able to get this to work was…

    1. WPSEO, uncheck “Strip the category base”
    2. Install WP No Category Base plugin

Ah, the WPSEO must be overwriting things properly. Because… what you’re doing is improper.

Primary site requires /blog/ in the Permalink in a subfolder install?

Officially? Yes. What you’re doing is an unsupported hack.
