Permalinks not working – 404 error

    Hello,
    I have just updated the Polylang plugin and I get a 404 error on every page. After some reading I discovered that others had fixed this problem by reseting the permalinks. I have changed the permalinks back to default and the 404 error goes away. However when I try and change the permalink setting back to pretty permalinks the 404 error reappears.
    I have tried deactivating all other plugins and this makes no difference.

    Could you please help?
