permalinks and windows

  • I’m trying to use index.php as a 404 page and by doing so, have it handle the permalink functionality. I’m running 1.5-beta-1 2005-01-05 on IIS.

    It seems IIS handles this in a different way. I had a look in the wp-blog-header.php and got the permalinks working for posts by evaluating the $_SERVER[‘QUERY_STRING’] variable. This contains both the error and the target url in this format: 404;https://localhost/wordpress/uncategorized/hello-worl

    Now I’m new to both wordpress and php so I have a couple of questions:
    – does this qualiffy as a bug as it is on windows plaform?
    – if it is a bug, – how can I help?
    – if it is not a bug, could I hack my way arround it?

  • The fix is really simple and involves a single IIS configuration change which fixes this problem which doesn’t cause any problems with crawlers / search engine spiders.

    1. Open the IIS Manager console.
    2. Access the properties for your website.
    3. Click the “Home Directory” tab.
    4. Click the “configration” button.
    5. Select “.asp” and click the “edit” button.
    6. Ensure the “check file exists” checkbox is enabled.
