• Hi. I’m new to wordpress, but I’ve spent two days reading posts without coming across anything similar to my problem, maybe it’s something obvious that I’m missing…

When I try to get pretty permalinks on my site, they work on the pages and the blog entries, but not in my portfolio – that’s where I get the 404 error. When I go to the default permalink settings, I get the ?p=123 ugly permalinks on my pages and blog entries…but NOT on my portfolio, they show up as what seems to be pretty permalinks. So it’s half ugly, half pretty. I don’t know what to do.

My site is hosted at GoDaddy, the WP is at the root, the .htaccess has there and is enabled for writing…., I’ve flushed the permalinks and all the other suggestions, yet nothing resolves it. Maybe I’m putting the wrong custom structure into the permalink settings, I just am not sure what I’m doing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Right now it’s set to default permalinks.

  • Have you tried using this and see if it works

The way it is set up is I created names for all the galleries (photography, weddings, etc), with no “parent”. The individual portfolio posts are then put into categories.
I hope I’m explaining that correctly.

My error says “Error 404 not found” and prevents me from logging in to edit my pages/posts. Can anyone help me?
I’ve not entered this problem before.

@lori J Can you log in admin or you getting 404 error on there as well

@zannasf Have you tried to use NextGen Gallery plugin rather than creating a gallery you just create a galley in Next Gen and use short code in post or pages.

@ govpatel I have tried logging in through Admin. That is where the error is.

    Thanks.

Have you tried to reset to default theme if not then using your ftp rename the theme you are using to anything say add -bak to the name this will force twenty ten theme to open and then let me know if you can log in

I’m not sure what’s happening here, before I tried anything, I just logged in as normal with no problems. I can only hope it continues – first time in 4 months that I’ve encountered that. Thanks.

Did you add any plugin that would have caused this problem.
using ftp go to wp_content/plugins see if can delete that plugin

I only updated a couple – it’s very strange. It’s worked fine the rest of the day? But I sure did panic. Guess we’ll wait and see. Thanks.

govpatel…I’ve tried everything with no success. I think I’ll try a clean install and start over. For now, I’ve “rigged” it to work, which was a manual link to the blog posts (all 100 of them!)

Thanks for all your suggestions, support and help. It is not resolved, but we keep moving on…

What do you mean by rigged it to work? Could you please explain?

    (@zannasf)

Meaning that instead of pulling up portfolio posts, I pointed the portfolio to blog post (by making the slugs identical). Not what I wanted but it will function until I get it resolved.

@zannasf I think it may be the way you have posted as you are ok till you come post page from portfolio and then you getting 404 from the post page.

I click a child from portfolio say books a page opens and when mouseover first book get this link

    https://www.picturiapress.com/portfolio/its-the-water

looking at that link is its-the-water post in portfolio or books.

Like to clarify a few things first.

From your original post you’ve mentioned that it was half ugly half pretty which suggests to me your portfolio pages are custom post types (CPT). It that correct? Is it a mix of CPT, pages and posts or just CPT, including /portfolio/?

You said you created names for all the galleries (photography, weddings, etc), with no parent. So those are categories in a custom taxonomy? ie, a new group of categories for the portfolio CPT?

Meaning that instead of pulling up portfolio posts, I pointed the portfolio to blog post (by making the slugs identical).

You mean you manually edited the slug in post editor to, for example, /portfolio/its-the-water/?
