• Have a question, have my permalinks currently setup as /%topic/%post-name%/

    i have a travel blog, let’s call it testravelblog.com

i have categories setup as well, let’s say “florida”, “california”

now if i post a hotel review in florida it would be testravelblog.com/florida/hyatt-grande-orlando

but what happens if I want to post a generic blog, that does not have a category? I do not want it to say in link /uncategorized/

example, if I did “best hotels in U.S.” and I wanted the link to be: testravelblog.com/best-hotels-us/

basically i want some posts to show their category in the url (if a category is selected), but if uncategorized is specified i want link to come directly from the root. testravelblog.com/post-name/

i have tried permalink plugins, which work in changing the url, but then my sitemap generator shows the old url (tried with yoast and google sitemap plugin).

    Any help would be appreciated

If Uncategorized is your default category, that is exactly what will happen.

It’s not actually possible to publish a post in WordPress without a category, the default category will always be applied.

In this case, I recommend creating a more satisfactory category for general stuff, like “General”, then setting that as your Default Post Category at Settings > Writing in your site’s Dashboard.

This way an “uncategorized” post would be: example.com/general/post-title/
