I have created a blog for a Thai client and she made a page with a title in Thai characters. When I view the page I see the the link to the page with Thai characters representing the page in my browser like domain.com/?????????. So it sort of seems to work. NB The link behind is very long and ugly.
My question is, do pretty permalinks with non latin characters work and do search engines handle them well or do they just see a link like: https://domain.com/%E0%B9%84%E0%B8%A1%E0%B9%88%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%9B%E0%B9%87%E0%B8%99%E0%B9%84%E0%B8%A3/ ? In that case pretty urls with non latin characters are not useful. I am afraid that that is the case, but I would like to get a confirmation to be sure…

  • That is the problem with non-Eglish names in URLs. They are shown as entities and not in in the language’s character set.

But search engines do index them. Now you have 2 choices:

    1. Leave the title of the posts in your own language but edit the permalink part to be in English so that it attracts more people – including those who search in English

    or,

    2. Let the title as well as the permalink in Thai so that folks who search using Thai language land on your blog. This will be preferred in the case of articles with an ethnic flavour.

I have a similar experience with my blog in Tamil.

Thanks for your reply Kichu. This plus a look at your blog cleared things. ??
