Permalink problem?

  • I have just finished building my new website and this is the first time for me. My old website is still present at https://www.blackstage-forensics.co.uk and I created the new WordPress site at https://www.blackstage-forensics.co.uk/wordpress/ after installing WordPress on the 123-reg Windows server. All went well. I renamed the folder containing the old site to <filename>.old and then changed the permalink addresses so the new site would appear at the original domain, rather than /wordpress/ in the URL. I tried to log in and failed. When I try to login at https://www.blackstage-forensics.co.uk/wp-login.php , I get a “404 – File or directory not found” after entering my username and password. I have spent hours trawling through forums and have not found a resolution and I am pretty desperate. Any help would be really appreciated. I have temporarily restored the old site to the URL.
