I have a test site on my PC running in a wamp environment. It was set up with the default permalink setting of /?p=123. I’ve changed it to /postname/, /%postname%/, and /%category%/%postname%/, and when I click a post it shows the correct URL in the title bar but cannot find the post.

I’ve tried this with both old and new posts (created after the changes) and nothing works.

The .htaccess file is processed, and that’s evident in the renaming of the URL.

Checking the database, I see the post has the numeric link (e.g. ?p=123) but changing that to the postname makes no difference. Presumably the numeric link is to provide a unique id.

Anyone have a clue about what might be causing this?

I changed the permalink settings back to numeric and all the posts, whether created before or after the previous changes, worked fine.

That doesn’t solve my problem though.

I’ve removed all plugins and changed the theme to 2014, and still no success. I’m wondering now if it’s because the installation is on my PC, even though I can’t think of why that would have any effect.

I’m marking this as resolved, though it isn’t.

After exploring every path I could think of, I concluded the problem was intractable. The good news is that I bit the bullet, made the change to my live site, and it worked immediately and seamlessly, so I no longer have to get it working on the test site.
