Performance Problems / is give slow?

  • Hello,
    i have problems with a very bad performance of my wordpress, especially if I am logged in.

    Running the plugin P3 – Plugin Performance Profiler, it’s look likes that Give-Plugin does add a pretty high share to the total amount of time needed to load the page. The time Give needs runs from 0.02 to 2s, but in most cases about 1,5s. For a simple plugin like give I consider this way to slow.

    I would like to know, if this is a known problem? What can I do (beside deactivating the plugin) to troubleshoot the problem?

    Hi Konrad,

    Give actually isn’t a particularly “simple” plugin (compare it more to EDD or Gravity Forms). Besides that though, Give is also not slow, so the results you found are not typical at all. My guess is that your results are most likely due to related javascripts running at the same time as Give.

    There are many many MANY things to consider when diagnosing slowness with WordPress sites. I believe even if you disabled Give you wouldn’t see a dramatic increase in your page speed. So I’d encourage you to read around a bit on optimizing your WordPress site for performance. Start at the hosting level, that’s typically the biggest impact on speed.

    FWIW, I have a similar experience. After the latest update, my site has been crawling. P3 Profiler pointed to Give, so I deactivated it. Now the site is appropriately speedy again.

    I have had this experience with Give in the past, but not every update causes this.

    Hi @jessycafrederick – would you mind sharing the information P3 Profiler provided? Also, it would be helpful to know a bit about your system such as which version of PHP you’re running, etc. We never want to slow anyone’s site down and work hard to ensure Give runs as smoothly as possible for our users.

    I became frustrated with the slowdown so I added one of your competitor’s plugins. It provided me with an error regarding the IPN callback from PayPal, which I thought was weird because some of the other plugins use it just fine.

    Then I remembered one of the security measures installed by SecuPress was to put .htaccess files in all of the subdirectories, essentially blocking any direct .php file access via an http request. When I removed one of those .htaccess files, it fixed the problem within your competitor’s plugin.

    So then I wondered if this was the issue with Give, too. So I reactivated it. The site is not as slow as it was before I deleted the offending .htaccess file, but it is still slower than without Give altogether.

    I am happy to provide data regarding the P3 Profile and other information.

    Do you have somewhere I can email the data? It’s laborious to upload images via this tool. I’ll send both the “before” and “after” data for the .htaccess fix.
