per-category date archives not working

  • My permalink structure is:

    /%category%/news/%postname%/

    So, I would expect to be able to access a category’s May 2009 archive at:

    /%category%/news/2009/05/

    However, this just gives a 404. This URL works:

    /2009/05/

    But of course that’s all categories. How do I access the monthly archives for a particular category?
