Pdf won’t upload correctly

I’ve had my site on WordPress for many years with very few problems. Today, for some reason, when I uploaded a pdf document made from a Word docx, its formatting was messed up. It’s a page with a graphic on top and text below, all with a white background – what uploaded was the graphic and a <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>black</span> background, obscuring the text.
I’ve attached the black one, as uploaded to WP; since I can’t upload the correctly-formatted one, I can’t attach it, but I made an image of the original page, which you can see here: https://davidmisch.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/MischComedyApocalypse.png

I don’t see this. I see a standard PDF file with a white background.
In fact, I don’t see any difference between the PDF and the image at all.
