• When we upload PDFs, the picture in media manager and when posted in a page is now coming out black. This started recently. It seems to be server-wide. It was reported by a client and I tested it on a demo site and got the same. I also tested resaving the PDF in various ways (including triple checking it had an appropriate background color) but that didn’t help.

Can anyone tell me what the issue might be? Given that WordPress just had major updates, I don’t know whether something has changed that is messing with the PDF or something was changed by the web host. The sites haven’t had any new plugins or theme alterations of late. I need something specific to tell the hosting support if it’s something they’ve done.

I don’t know. Those are pretty old, would they apply to something that just started? I would’ve thought those would be fixed by now. (Unless a recent update UNfixed them. Though the 2 sites I’ve tried were slightly different versions, it’s only one update off.) And if so what do I do? It seems to be host wide. I’ve looked at everything from Imagemagik to modsecurity but such details seem to be far beyond the CPanel access.

I suggest to create a PDF with a text editor, a simple PDF with just text. Upload it and check if it still displays all black.

    That works fine on upload.
But that isn’t what is usually done. There is custom pdf created in Adobe Acrobat Pro, InDesign, and so on. Yet they aren’t working right.

I’ve noticed if I go to print, but print it to adobe pdf instead of the printer those usually work fine as well.

Ok, it’s weirder. I just checked the files in CPanel. The files LOOK FINE. They show as they should with white background. The same if I download. But when viewed in WordPress they show black. SAME file. I’m looking at the attachment page. This isn’t something I’ve done. This makes no sense.

Sounds like a problem we have too.

Ive had this issue for years..We are constantly having different programmers look at it. and Im always looking on forums for a solution.

currently, our admins save it back in acrobat to Version 4 and flatten transparencies and then upload.

Ours is something with when there is transparencies in the file it renders the preview/thumbnail black. I cant figure out basically to say if transparent render = white.

I have this same exact issue, and know that it began after 11/30/21 and before 12/23/21. Before and after. The thumbnails mirror exactly as they appear when opened full-size in the “Edit Media” window (i.e. the larger version is also corrupt) but the PDF itself when opened directly is fine.

The PDF is plain text, generated within NeoOffice Mac, the only wrench being an emoji used liberally throughout.

There are plugins that used to allow re-generation of PDF thumbs but they haven’t been updated in 5+ years. There are threads like this one and this one that claim GS Only PDF Preview still works and solved this problem.

Found the transparency issue to be true – if I flatten my pdf’s before adding to the ML, they no longer show as black. You can flatten online here – I tested and it does work – https://www.sejda.com/flatten-pdf (tried another flattening site online, did not work, so YMMV) or in Adobe Acrobat Pro, go to Tools > Print Production > Flattener Preview and flatten all pages in document (I used all other presets, didn’t change anything) and it came out flattened, no black in the ML.
