Have the latest version of the plugin and WordPress installed. When I try to get a PDF to open in a Popup box, instead what I get is the image link or link text itself in a fancybox which then links to a download of the PDF… that is instead of displaying the PDF in the popup window, it displays whatever I set to link to the PDF be it an image or just text.

This is soo odd as this has never happened to me or my sites before…

    Ideas?

  • It looks like the browser is missing a PDF Viewer plugin and cannot render the PDF visibly on the page. What you see as alternative is a download link so at least the user can download the file and open it as local file in standard PDF reader software.

You can try to change the Embed method in the PDF section on Settings > Media but I think that won’t make a big difference.

FancyBox is not a PDF reader, just a way to embed and present media files. The browser always needs to have the ability to render those files (in case of PDF files either with a plugin or internal like Chrome) or else it won’t work…

I get the same problem when I use Chrome with the Developer mode (F12) enabled.
It works fine in desktop mode – even if I make the window very narrow, but if I switch to mobile emulation I get a white popup with the file name on it.

Surely this should work, as it’s using the same browser in both modes.

(it also doesn’t work on a real iPhone or Android phone.)

Maybe the Chrome browser developer takes into account that the iPad browser does not render PDF files inline?
