PDF Files – not linking through Posts or Pages

I am trying to load a PDF file into a page for visitors to my site to download and so far have followed all the steps through Media files and created a link in the page but when I then test the link it goes through to a page that says sorry cannot find the page. ( I note that on the drop down for Insert Media there is only ALL Media Items: Uploaded to the page ; Images; Audio ; Video; Unattached with no reference to PDF or similar file types (although I have managed to load a pdf file into the media library and it is showing in category – uploaded to this page)

I have also tried using a plugin – embed-any-document but just got a screen saying “preview not available”.

Any help to resolve this would be appreciated.
