Hi I wanted to put some buttons or links on static pages to some pdf files in the wp-content/uploads directory

I have followed the wp instructions around making links but they fail to do anything. If I right mouse click and open in a new tab I can get the file but not by just clicking on it.

I have enabled open in a new browser on the link properties but this does nothing.

There are no error messages or changes to the web page at the point of clicking on the published link.

Any thoughts what maybe going on here?

    Thanks

sadly this is pre production and not online yet.

There may be something odd with your server configuration. Does this work with other file types (jpd, doc, etc.?)

I tried with a word .doc file but that errored on upload as a security risk so I tried with an mp3 file which worked perfectly.

The issue appears to be the actioning of the click just doesn’t do anything but if I right mouse click on the link and open it works or if I put the full path to the pdf into a browser it also works

This should work with a default WordPress install. You don’t have any plugins that affect downloads, do you?

I have posted a question with all in one wp security to ask if they have any restrictions there.

I do not have any other plugins related to file download.

It just looks like there is an issue with clicking a link for PDF documents. All the other permitted file types work as expected.

So I removed the all in one security plugin and no change to the problem. Where else can I look for a solution to this problem?

    Thanks

It looks like it is specifically associated with the master site in my multisite install. If I try the same PDF on any of my sub sites the PDF downloads perfectly. If I try to download from the main site it just doesn’t do anything.

I think I will open a thread on the multisite forum as well

This should have been in the multisite subforum from the beginning. Multisite is different in many different respects.

Any ideas from the multisite group why I can’t download or link to PDF files on the main site but I can on sub folder sites?

    Thanks

So I just tried a couple of different PDF files and they do not work on the main site either but do on the sub sites.

Also tried word and an mp3 file and they do work on the main site so its still just PDF files on the main site.

You can right mouse click on the links and you can download them that way but clicking on them just doesn’t do anything

Is there a setting which can restrict how a link works to a PDF?

I can right mouse click and open but not left mouse click to open

I’ve checked the file permissions and they look right.

Have you tried deactivating the plugins that are only activated on the mainsite to see if this solves your issue? If so, then reactivate them one by one to find the problem one. If not, try temporarily switching to one of the 20-something default themes– sometimes a theme can cause a plugin-like conflict.
