I am using PayPal Smart Checkout and prefer to keep using it.

I am having an issue where the Paypal payment popup comes up when they click on one of the cards shown under the Paypal Button.

Normal Cart View with Paypal button

Now if a person clicks on the Paypal button (the yellow one) the Paypal popup loads centered on the page, which is what it should do

    Paypal Popup Centered

However (and this is inconsistent) if a person clicks on one of the cards under the Paypal button, e.g. Visa, AMEX etc, the Paypal Popup moves to the left. For example

    Paypal on left now

I said inconsistent as it usually happens on Edge, but tests have shown it happen on Chrome and Firefox for some people

Is there a way to fix this?

Hi, thank you for reaching out to us. For testing purposes, can you test one of WordPress default themes like Twenty Seventeen. Then carry out a test. Let me know what happens.

    Thank you

    OK, it does the same.

From what I can tell, clicking on the yellow paypal button brings the pop-up window. However clicking on the card symbols shows an overlay, not a pop-up window.

    So that is the difference.

I have changed the layout yo be horizontal in the Advanced settings so it only shows the yellow paypal button, which works fine.

While resolved for our use, maybe you can take a look at it and see why it does an overlay with the cards clicked instead of the pop-up window

    Cheers

For card, PayPal smart checkout API shows the form within the page (not a popup). It comes from there API. It looks like the theme is failing to contain that section nicely.

This looks like a theme CSS issue. Try doing a theme switching test (quickly) by switching to one of the default WordPress themes to confirm the issue.
