PayPal not being supportive with Reference Transactions

  • Has anybody here been having a hard time by PayPal refusing to enable Reference Transactions for their account?

    I sell subscriptions on my site, so this feature needs to be activated on my account, yet PayPal states you either need Business Support or an Account Manager on your account. Both are impossible to obtain if you are a startup. They require your business earns $100,000 per year, among other things.

    I found this shocking because you are alienating a huge number of potential clients. Also nobody seems to mention this online. Is PayPal pulling my leg here or should I be more aggressive with this? We are losing potential sales because of this.

    Business Support

    Anyone can apply for a business account?

    Yes I know, I have a business account, but business support is a different thing apparently which I don’t qualify for.

    Edit: In an initial email they stated my company would need to generate $100,000 per year, but in a more recent email they state the following:

    “You need to have at least 90 days of PayPal account
    Have received more than $10.000,00 in commercial payments and have an income of 2.500 euros or more per month.
    After reaching these requirements, you can request for Business support to your account.”

    Firstly, they seem to be inconsistent in the requirements. Secondly, has anybody been successful in enabling Reference Transactions without meeting this criteria? They just block startups completely?

    Sorry to bother you again Mike,

    I am wondering if you have any news from PayPal? Since my last post, we looked into other payment gateways using credit cards, but finally receiving a needed merchant account is proving very difficult for a startup like my company.

    I’m back to hoping something can be worked out with PayPal since it’s at the final stage of just enabling this one simple feature.
