    Just in case anyone else is encountering a similar issue, the problem here is that PayPal Express is not one of the payment gateways that currently supports automatic renewal of Subscriptions.

    Here is a list of methods that support automatic payments.

    To use PayPal Express or any other method not on that list as a checkout method for Subscriptions, you will need to accept manual renewals.

    As the documentation linked above notes, you can do this by going to WooCommerce -> Settings -> Subscriptions and checking the Accept Manual Renewals box.

    OK so that would explain why this plugin doesn’t appear to support “Automatic Recurring Payments” on WooCommerce -> Settings -> Checkout -> Checkout Options

    I don’t understand why this is not clearly documented on the plugin’s description however. It states “PayPal Express allows you to securely sell your products and subscriptions” so i would have thought it supports renewals.

    I’m sure PayPal allows you to create subscriptions when using Express Checkout, so is it safe to assume that it’s just a limitation of this plugin and not PayPal itselef?

    Do you plan to support automatic renewals anytime soon?

    I work at PayPal and am a Technical account manager working with Woo. We are looking to get Woo Subscription working with Express checkout plugin shortly. I will work with woo to update the EC page to reflect details accurately that it does not currently work with Woo subscriptions!
